BÉSICS® Straws are primarily made from Ingeo™ 1 biopolymer, plastic made from plants, not oil.. Ingeo™ 1 is used in a wide range of applications and shares many of the same mechanical characteristics as traditional oil-based plastics, but it has a very different lifecycle. These straws not only come from an annually renewable resource, but will also compost completely and safely in commercial composting facilities, certified by DIN Certco to be in accordance
with the European composting standard EN 13432.
The creation of Ingeo™ 1 involves the transformation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere into performance biopolymers. Through the process of plant photosynthesis, atmospheric carbon is converted into simple plant sugars. Our resin provider, NatureWorks LLC, uses technology that ferments these plants sugars into a green building block, lactic acid, which is then turned into a performance “biobased” polymer suitable for end products such as our compostable straws. NatureWorks LLC, is pursuing next generation feedstocks such as sugars from corn stover, wood chips, switch grass or straw and eventually possibly bypassing the agricultural step altogether by converting carbon dioxide or methane directly to Ingeo™ 1.
